Operations Manager Position

At our lakefront location in downtown Kelowna, we provide our members with top-quality moorage in Canada's largest fresh-water marina, excellent food and beverage service, social events and opportunities to assist others in the community. A not-for-profit organization, Kelowna Yacht Club has been supporting boater education and safe, responsible enjoyment of Okanagan Lake since 1945.

  • The Operations Manager's position is an integral, specialized and diverse position within the Club and is part of the senior management team. Therefore, this position will work with other senior managers and Board of Directors to ensure and to provide a professional, courteous and seamless level of service to the membership of the Club.

Under the direction of the General Manager, the Operations Manager:

  • Is responsible for the safe and efficient management of the Kelowna Yacht Club clubhouse and moorage facilities.
  • Is responsible to ensure a wide variety of tasks are efficiently carried out to ensure members enjoy all the Club's programs and services in a timely, friendly and professional manner.
  • Provides leadership to the development and implementation of the annual Moorage & Facility plans and budgets.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the General Manager, and as a member of the Management Team, the Operations Manager's responsibilities include:

  •  Develop and implement department budgets and operational plans in consultation with the General Manager and appropriate Board members/committees.
  • Monitor and maintain the moorage basin and associated equipment such as docks, pump out station, and club owned boats
  •  Ensure the facilities are safe and secure and comply with the policies and procedures outlined in the Policy & Procedures and Moorage Regulations and Insurance Regulations.
  •  Conduct repairs and maintenance of equipment and facilities as required.
  • Supervise and train staff in the repair and maintenance of the moorage basin and Clubhouse facilities;
  •  Manage all contracted repair, maintenance and services such as janitorial, security, HVAC, elevator, docks, fire suppression, etc.
  •  Oversee the allocation and tracking of moorage and ensure moorage compliance is adhered to by the Kelowna Yacht Club and mooring members. Provide direction and support to the Moorage Coordinator, feedback and guidance to the Moorage Committee and staff that administer the assignment of slips from the Wait/Move lists.
  •  Respond to member inquires and resolve conflicts.
  •  Observe all Club policies in dealing with the membership and ensure that all Club Regulations and By-laws are respected and complied with.
  •  On request, represent the Club with outside organizations, contractors and levels of government, including serving as the primary spokesperson when appropriate.
  • Provide direction and management of activities for the seasonal Sailing School program in collaboration with the Sailing Staff.
  •  Direct and manager roles of the seasonal dockhands.
  •  Participate in and support a wide range of club activities and special events as a member of various organizing committees and groups;

 Skills and Experience:


  • Proven ability to establish budgets, maintain budgets, inventory control and record keeping practices.
  • Understand and address policies and procedures as related to operations of the moorage basin and clubhouse facilities.
  •  Up-to-date knowledge of building maintenance practices, procedures and schedules regarding HVAC systems, janitorial service contracts and related security systems and contracts; and other building requirements.
  •  Ability to chair and/or participate in meetings, committees and working groups and when requested.
  •  Effective communication skills on all levels of interaction with Board of Directors, General Manager, members, staff and clients.
  •  Skilled in win/win negotiation and facilitation skills to enter into and manage projects, facility up-grades, equipment warranty work; renovations and service contracts with external service providers such as janitorial or security firms.
  •  Ability to use a variety of technology to work effectively with the Club's computerized financial and administrative system (Jonas) as well as Microsoft Suite and other commonly used applications and technologies.
  •  Experience in working in a volunteer-based club, a marine environment, managing a physical plant or facility and/or property management is an asset.
  • Experience in selecting and managing personnel.

  • Permanent full-time
  • Hour primarily 9 am to 5 pm however flexibility is required to address events and situations during evenings, weekends and public holidays/event days.
